Valentine’s Day is an important day to us at Green Action Centre. Not only is it a time to reflect on sustainable gift giving ideas, it is also our birthday!
This year, Green Action Centre turns 32, and have we aged well!
Together, we have made strides in active and safe routes to school, workplace commuting, and composting. Since our creation in 1985 as the Recycling Council of Manitoba, we’ve gone through some name changes, established ourselves as the green living hub, and even celebrated a significant 30 year milestone.
Green Action Centre has helped Manitoba achieve some amazing things in recent years. We were part of the coalition to encourage the province to implement a pesticide ban (an issue still being fought for today). The Commuter Challenge event in Manitoba, ran by Green Action Centre, has 13 consecutive years of being first place as the green commuting province in Canada. We’ve trained almost 200 Manitobans to be master composters, and began helping residents and businesses of Winnipeg with compost pickup through our Compost Winnipeg social enterprise. Our safe routes to school program has helped over a dozen schools with school travel planning
and have implemented several apps that make collecting and sharing transportation data easy and useful. Green Action Centre has also completed several major transportation studies and recommendations for many businesses in Manitoba, including an ambitious project for the University of Manitoba. In the near future, we are also looking to fill a need for Manitoba carpoolers through a regional ridematching program using RideShark. We also offer to schools across Manitoba a variety of presentations on environmental responsibility, and present to more than 100 classrooms each year. We’ve been busy!
As always, thank you to everyone for your continued support and engagement. Without your feedback and initiative, Green Action Centre would not be capable of providing so many great opportunities for Manitobans to choose to live a more environmentally-conscious lifestyle. So in closing, happy birthday to us, and a many happy (and productive!) returns.
Sincerely,
The Board and Staff of Green Action Centre
