Stride into Walktober 2023! Sign up for some month long fun with active transportation.

The Sustainable Transportation team at Green Action Centre invites you to join us from October 1st-31st, 2023, to celebrate! With International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 5th, 2023, we have a full month of programming prepared to share with students, teachers, administrators, and parents.

What To Expect for Walktober 2023

Walktober focuses on creating healthy routines of active transportation within the community and is an opportunity for students to explore their neighborhood, get active before and after school, and build confidence by safely walking or biking to school.

The program is adapted for all students across the province to participate together outdoors or in the classroom. This includes an updated activity kit filled with hands-on learning opportunities about sustainable transportation and road safety. Walkabouts are available at schools in the Winnipeg area. Students will have the opportunity to navigate their community and identify hazards and improvements that can be made to enjoy their route to and from school. Spaces are limited for the scheduled Walkabouts, so please register as soon as possible! Teachers are also able to schedule their own walkabouts.

This year, we are also incorporating a new activity that can be done in the classroom or at home. Have you ever heard of Inktober? Now we are combining Walktober and Inktober as part of the month of programming. Each Monday during the month, we will email a prompt out to facilitators, and participants will draw the prompt, send it to us via email (asrts@greenactioncentre.ca) or post it on social media and tag @greenactioncentre. We encourage students/participants of all ages to give it a shot.

To prepare for Walktober, print the Kilometre Tracking Sheet in English or French to engage students in tracking their route to school or tally up the distances you do as a group. While its called Walktober, You can count any active way of getting from A to B – hopping, walking, biking, skateboarding, wheeling, or scootering! Participate in a way that works for you and your students, whether it’s one day, one day each week, or the entire month. This month also offers you as educators a great oppertunity to schedule walks with your class, chat about environmental changes students may have noticed and talk about the importance of active travel!

For Parents and Facilitators

We will be hosting a Parents Information Webinar for ASRTS on October 18th. This is a great opportunity to see for yourself what kind of work the Active and Safe Routes to school Program does and how you can participate as a parent or educator. Registration will be sent out shortly but if you are interested, you can sign up here!

Want to participate in the fun? Walktober occurs at the same time as Gotober, another annual event put of by Green Action Centre’s Worker Commuter Options program. This year, due to a software change, we are moving Gotober to November for Govember
