Summer is (FINALLY) in full swing and getting outside and active is great for your physical and mental health! Whether you just need some ideas on fun activities to enjoy outside or you are looking to plan out your Challenge days this is the post for you!

This years Commuter Challenge recognizes that getting around sustainably isn’t only about going to and from work, so we want to encourage making small changes in your day to day lives which can make a big impact in the long run to both your health and the environment!

All activities listed in this post can be counted towards chances to WIN prizes during the week of JUNE 5 – 11, 2022, just make sure to enjoy them using active and/or sustainable movement! Simply register for free in teams with your friends, family, coworkers or even solo; log any and all of your active or sustainable movement throughout the week, and you will be entered to win awesome prizes! But the most important thing is… HAVE FUN!

Pop-Up Pit-Stops!

We are so excited to celebrate with our Clean Air Day Pop-up Pit-Stops, these events will take place during the Commuter Challenge on June 8, 2022. You can see more details on each event in our blog post

You can expect to see us at the following locations throughout the day:

  • True North Square for Lunch & “Lawn” Games (11:30am – 1:30pm);
  • Nonsuch Brewery for Beers & Bike Repairs with Natural Cycle (3:00 – 6:00pm);
  • and at the Legislature Grounds for your Clean Air Commute (3:00 – 5:30pm).

BINGO!

We challenge you to complete as many activities as you can on the Bingo sheet! Every activity challenge that you complete and post to social media during the Challenge week will enter you to win the Bingo Prizes! The more posts and activities you complete, the more chances you have to win.

Additional Resources & Ideas!

We have gathered some resources to make it easy for you to enjoy these various activities! Keep checking back on this post as we will add more resources when they become available.

Central Winnipeg Bike Loop

This is the perfect way to quickly and safely get some kilometres in during the Challenge! The Central Winnipeg Bike Loop will take you through 7 central neighbourhoods of Winnipeg; with 10 kilometres of bike paths, maps to help you along the way, and tons of awesome spots to stop at throughout the trip. This is the perfect activity to get confident in your biking skills and learn how accessible Winnipeg is by bike! 

Not to be mistaken, we also have The Loop here in Winnipeg! This is a short and sweet walking trail downtown and around the river. There is also a guide to it here.

Manitoba Trees

Use this free guidebook as a starting point to explore your neighbourhood, so you can learn more about the types of trees we have here in Manitoba. There is a ton of information to learn how to identify the trees, our eco-zones,  and just get to know what nature here has to offer!
Take a walk and see if you can identify the various trees you live by.

Tours of the Exchange District

The Exchange District Biz has multiple tours available with various attractions and themes. You can go with a guide or do a self-guided audio tour! 

Learn new facts and hear about Winnipeg’s unique history and the stories behind our beautiful buildings. Keep track of your kilometres while doing these tours during the Challenge week for chances to win!

Open Streets

Check out the full list of Enhanced Summer Bike Routes that are available for cycling throughout the city. These are great safe spaces to practice your cycling skills, get some physical activity and get comfortable on the roads! Check out GoManitoba to get matched up with Cycling Mentors for tips & tricks to biking safely!

Please note: 30 km speeds are now in effect 24/7 on all 15 designated routes. Individual routes will not be considered fully operational until after each has been serviced by the City’s spring cleanup operations. Routes will be marked as “open” as conditions allow and the additional weekend measures are put into place.

Parks

There are tons of parks to explore both within Winnipeg and throughout Manitoba.

Please note: many areas and parks throughout Manitoba are closed due to weather and safety conditions, please check in to ensure your safety if you are planning to visit any parks or campgrounds. Current closures and affected areas can be seen here.

Little Libraries

Check out the map and find your nearest Little Library. Simply bring a book and exchange it for a different one!

Tour The Forks

Learn more about this historical site and about the diverse history you may not be aware of! Grab your headphones, download the free audio tour file, and head outside to the Canopy to begin an immersive journey. Pause the audio during your walk to explore further and engage with points of interest. The Forks site encompasses over 6,000 years of history.

Interested in Art?

Explore our city through public art with a free walking and cycling tour! There are many dates available this summer, although they aren’t available during the Commuter Challenge it is still a great way to get outside! 

Winnipeg is also filled with new and old murals, take a walk around and see how many you can spot! Or check out these websites for locations and more details on murals and ghost signs.

Bike Week!

Last but not least, Bike Week is rolling along side the Commuter Challenge! There are so many events taking place that week, like activities, challenges, and events!

We will be joining them for Bike to Work Day at Wellington Crescent & Harrow Street!
