We are excited to invite you to the second part of the Depave Paradise Event at Rossbrook House: The Planting Event

Join us on Friday, July 15th, 2022 at 5pm for an evening of planting a garden. Rossbrook House and Green Action Centre have teamed up with Depave Paradise project to remove the concrete in front of Rossbrook House and replace it with a beautiful green space called Maamaa-Ahki Gizaagi-igoo: Mother Earth, We Love You.

The Depave Event

The Depave Event on July 9th, 2022 was a huge success! More than 40 volunteers showed up for a day of impactful community engagement. Starting with a blessing and smudging from a knowledge keeper, Matthew Mousseau, the volunteers got to work reclaiming the land in front of Rossbrook House.

Volunteers dug up concrete with shovels and prybars, and dropped the debris in drop boxes that would later be picked up. Smaller pieces of concrete were placed inside gabion benches.

Meanwhile, the children painted some of the small pieces of broken concrete to fill the gabion benches, which will add a personal and colorful touch to Maamaa-Ahki Gizaagi-igoo.

Volunteers worked until 2:00pm (while breaking for snacks, water, and lunch, of course). It was forecasted to rain, but the volunteers got lucky and were able to work without getting wet and enjoy the rest of the beautiful day.

The Planting Event

The next step is the planting event. Grasses, wildflowers, shrubs, and a tree all native to Manitoba and coming from Prairie Originals, will be planted in the new greenspace for all to enjoy.

What to Expect

We will be meeting at 5:00pm in front of Rossbrook House, located at 658 Ross Avenue. The planting will begin at 6pm after some opening statements, acknowledgements, and a safety tutorial.

What to Bring

  • Clothes you are okay with getting dirty
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Sunglasses/hat

We hope to see you there!
