I live in St. Boniface, which hasn’t been mentioned as one of the areas where compost pickup will be starting in January. I’m interested, but wondering what constitutes a “neighbourhood” for the minimum 15 household requirement?
Hi Robbyn, glad to hear that our messaging has reached you and that you are interested! We have no defined ‘neighborhoods’ per se, but we could definitely consider Old/North St Boniface to be one neighbourhood (not including Windsor Park, Southdale, etc…). Compost Winnipeg was set up as a tool to reduce Green House Gases from organic waste. We also have to recognize the fuel and emissions that our truck uses and emits. So we want to be sure that we are being as fuel efficient as possible. If you don’t have a full 15 households, but the ones who are interested are all relatively close, we would definitely be open to being flexible. Feel free to chat with Kelly Kuryk, our Project Manager, at- 204-232-0025 to learn more. Thanks for commenting!
This is a very exciting development! I’m curious about the composting location and process used by Compost Winnipeg. Do you compost INSIDE the Social Enterprise Centre? Did GAC need to get an Environment Act License to operate their compost program?
Hi Ash, we think it’s exciting too! Compost Winnipeg picks up the compost and brings it to a site run by a third party near Stony Mountain. It is difficult to get an environmental license for a composting site and currently that is only one of two spots accepting compost in the Winnipeg area. So, no, the materials aren’t turned into finished compost inside the Social Enterprise Centre – that’s just the home for the offices! Because we aren’t doing the actual composting ourselves, just the pickup and transport, we didn’t need an Environmental Act License. Hope that answers your question! Feel free to get in touch with either the composting education team at compost@greenactioncentre.ca or the manager of Compost Winnipeg at info@compostwinnipeg.ca if you have any further questions.
The
Green Cart program has been one of the best programs that the City of Brandon has done. The program though is free for the citizens of Brandon with the finished black gold free for pick-up at the landfill.
We also hope (and are working to advocate) that Winnipeg will adopt a similar program of curbside organics pickup for composting! In the meantime, our social enterprise is offering this service to fill in an important environmental gap. Please feel free to pass this on to friends and family who may be interested, or contact us to see how you can get involved in composting initiatives in your community!
