Green Action Centre’s social enterprise is announcing its official launch with the Compost Winnipeg Downtown Challenge, beginning on Earth Day (April 22), and ending with the conclusion of International Compost Awareness Week (May 7).
During the two-week challenge, Compost Winnipeg will track the weight of organic waste they collect from all registered challenge participants. Prizes will be awarded for best compost champion, most enthusiastic team, and most waste diverted. All participants will be entered into a draw for an eco-everything deluxe gardening package.
New and existing clients of Compost Winnipeg are automatically registered for the challenge. Offices in the downtown area can also participate by paying a pro-rated fee-for-service during the two-week period.
Since their modest beginnings in August, Compost Winnipeg staff have collected and diverted just under 12,000 pounds of food scraps from the landfill—and that’s with fewer than a dozen clients. By the end of International Compost Awareness Week, they want the total weight of all organics collected to reach 15,000 pounds.
