We’re pleased to announce the publication of our new ON SITE Composting Guide. This accessible how-to guide features artwork contributed by Kara Hummelt, one of 220 graduates of our Master Composter Course, which has generated 8,000 community volunteer hours since 2004.
The ON SITE Multi-Family Composting pilot project provides all the necessary tools and resources for apartment and condo dwellers to begin composting at home, and the guide was developed to explain community composting using a triple-bin system. Program participants also benefit from site visits to monitor progress, a tailored presentation in their neighbourhood, and ongoing access to our Compost Info Line.
The pilot project was developed in response to ongoing delays regarding a municipal green bin program, and the lack of waste reduction options for residents in multi-unit dwellings. In less than a year, ON SITE has attracted a wait list of buildings that are interested in participating. CTV News captured our most recent installation at twin condos in the heart of Winnipeg.
ON SITE is made possible thanks to…

Hello, Thank you for this article and the work you have/are doing. I live in upstate NY and would like to begin composting for my (two person) home and invite neighbors to participate in contributing compost and receiving the advantage of completed compost for their gardens. Since we’re not in Manitoba, could you provide information that could be used by us here? Thanks for your help and any info you’re willing to share with us. Best wishes, Maryanne
Hi Maryanne! What a great idea, to start composting and include your neighbours! This multi-family guide has a few tips you may find useful, and head on over to our backyard composting page (https://greenactioncentre.ca/module/composting-2/composting-basics-and-getting-started/) and scroll right down to the very bottom for a downloadable 12-page guide on how to compost. As well, New York has a really robust Master Composter program (though this may be limited to those who live in NYC) – even if you cannot access the program, their Master Composter manual is basically the gold standard and is available for free online. Here’s a link! https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/dsny/docs/about_nyc-master-composter-manual-mcm_0815.pdf
You may find that through contacting this program, they can connect you with other more local resources as well. Feel free to get in touch with us at compost(at)greenactioncentre.ca anytime. Good luck and happy composting! 🙂
