From June 13th to 19th, Portage la Prairie hosted its first ever Bike Week!
Organized by the Portage Active Transportation Committee, the goal of the event was to get more people in Portage excited about cycling and out on two wheels.
To engage a variety of individuals and all ages in Bike Week, the committee organized a series of events. A bike rodeo, face painting and bike decorating appealed to the young (and young at heart!), while a public art tour and a historic buildings tour engaged more mature riders. To cap off the week, a Bike To School And Work day celebration engaged everyone on two wheels.
“Some of the comments I heard included how biking allowed individuals the opportunity to make social connections” said Dianna Meseyton-Neufeld, who sits on the Portage Active Transportation Committee. “I personally went on the Public Art Tour and saw things I didn’t know were in Portage. I was inspired to add some art of my own to my own yard.”
The Portage Active Transportation Committee is very engaged in Portage La Prairie, adding new paths, focusing on bike safety, advocating for safe modes of active transportation and much more. Bike Week 2015 was a success, and the committee is looking forward to planning the 2016 event.
Congratulations on a fantastic event, Portage. We look forward to hearing all about Bike Week 2016!
