Compost Winnipeg’s 2nd Annual Pumpkin Drop!
What is a “Pumpkin Drop”?
In partnership with CF Polo Park, we are inviting Winnipeggers to drop pumpkins off the 2nd level of the parkade into the back of our Hino collection truck for composting. This event is opening up to the general public to have their jack-o’-lanterns composted and experience the thrill of tossing it off a roof (of sorts).
When?
Saturday, November 5th at 10:00 am to 3:00 pm
FREE!
While this event is free, we welcome donations which we will put towards compost collection service for a local social service.
Where?
CF Polo Park Southeast Parkade (Near Sports Chek), 2nd level
Why?
Of the 80,000 tonnes of pumpkins produced in Canada, 66% are sold to consumers; often used for carving and are never eaten. Without intervention, this is an immense amount of organic waste destined for the landfill.
Furthermore, every year Compost Winnipeg has great difficulty accommodating all the pumpkins on our regular collection routes due to the space and volume they take up. This year we are trying this fun and unique approach to the problem while bringing attention to the importance of composting.
Results from the 1st Annual Pumpkin Drop
The first pumpkin drop was a smashing success that exceeded our wildest dreams!
oh and while om commenting, why not have it for a few days, instead of one? or at least a weekend? i realize for safety reasons you gotta have at least someone around, but only one volenteer is required per say. once the dump truck is parked, theres not much else to do…
This is a great idea, except it should be instituted at multiple locations around Winnipeg. Polo park is kinda far to travel to throw away an old pumpkin. The premise is great tho, but why not go at least a few stories higher? Have a lower one for the lil kiddies, and a higher one for us big kiddies?
