My neighbour decided to create a wonderful water feature for his 3 year old son from just a garden hose and a pop bottle. Simple, effective, and very fun for anyone looking to get wet and cool off, or give the garden a gentle soaking. What better way to re-purpose waste, and avoid buying new plastic products.
To seal the connection, a little duct tape around the bottle neck would do the job, or use a hose attachment with a compatible thread. The size and number of holes you make in the bottle customizes the type of spray – small holes create a fine mist which feels great in plus 30 degrees. Here’s a video that illustrates the steps to making one of your own!

After reading this, I decided to make a sprinkler myself. Unfortunately, stabbing a bottle with scissors left holes that were much too large and the resulting water streams only went about a foot. My sister made a much better design with small holes that sprays fine jets of water 8-10 feet in all directions. An awl or thin nail is the perfect size for your holes, start as small as you can and enlarge them later if needed.
Because my hose is threaded on the outside (like the bottle) I used a “tornado tube” connector to attach them. The end result is an inexpensive and customizable sprinkler. Great idea!
Great idea but I have a few suggestions
– Leave the top on the bottle when you are poking the holes and the bottle won’t crush.
– Use electrical or other stretchy type of tape that will seal the hose onto the bottle a bit better.
