It’s that time of year again, time for New Year resolutions.

Many people make resolutions to improve their health, happiness, and general well-being; which usually means a gym membership. We are here to tell you that despite what you may think, the gym isn’t the answer

For 2019, do yourself a favour and skip the annual gym membership. Instead, just go outside.

Incorporating outdoor physical activity into your daily routine is one of the simplest and most rewarding lifestyle changes you can make this year.

Here’s Why:

The benefits of being active outside go above and beyond those gained from exercising indoors. Outdoor physical activity has been linked to improved mental well-being, self-esteem, and mood. Exposure to nature also boosts your immune system, energy levels, and revitalizes you

When compared to the gym, nature is much cheaper (FREE) and provides much better scenery. Would you rather run on a treadmill with a TV, or look around at the animals, the plants, and the general beauty of your surroundings?

If that isn’t enough, studies demonstrate that persons who exercise outside tend to stick with their exercise programs more consistently than those who train indoors. If you’re having trouble sticking to that resolution, it’s time to get outside and get consistent.

Here’s How:

One of the best ways to stay consistent with your resolutions is to make them an unavoidable part of your day. This way, they become routine and habitual. Consider switching your car for an active commute, so outdoor activity is just a means of getting from A to B. Try logging your active commutes on GoManitoba to keep yourself accountable.

Here are some easy switches to get you outside and enjoying nature:

  • Instead of sitting on a stationary bike, try winter cycling.
  • Instead of the elliptical, try cross-country skiing.
  • Instead of the treadmill, try snowshoeing, walking, or running outdoors.

If those activities aren’t your speed, try alpine skiing, skating, or tobogganing. Whatever activity switch you make, you’ll be saving money, getting active, and enjoying the great outdoors.

Here’s What:

Making the change in January will help get you ready for the Jack Frost Challenge | Bougeons en Hiver, taking place February 3-9, 2019. It comes at the perfect time, just when you’ve hit your outdoor activity stride.

Register as an individual or a team of up to 5 persons. Help motivate one another throughout January and keep the momentum going all the way through the challenge!
