Join us in celebrating International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) May 5-11, 2024!
International Compost Awareness Week is a week dedicated to promoting all the benefits of composting!
Whether it’s spreading the word about composting, working on compost bins at your local community garden, or composting at home, there are many different options you can do to celebrate ICAW!
This year’s ICAW theme, COMPOST…Nature’s Climate Champion, highlights the role compost plays in reducing the impact of climate change by:
- 🌎 Decreasing methane: A greenhouse gas more than twenty-five times as impactful as carbon dioxide, methane can be significantly reduced through recycling organics
- 🌡️ Climate change mitigation: Compost’s return to the soil serves as a “carbon bank,” helping to store carbon and offering an answer to climate change mitigation
- 🌱 Reducing fertilizer needs: Compost improves soil water holding capacity, decreasing the need for synthetic fertilizers by slowly releasing nutrients over time, and enhances healthy soil conditions
- 🌞 Increasing resilience: Compost helps to increase resilience to the effects of climate change such as drought and extreme weather
