Water is our most important resource. Without it, life on earth could not exist. Canada Water Week is a week-long celebration of water from coast-to-coast-to-coast, starting March 14 and culminating with World Water Day on March 22, 2011.

Ecole St. Avila in Winnipeg is celebrating Canada Water Week with a month long festival to celebrate water and learn how the school’s new ‘rain garden playground’ helps keep our lakes, rivers and streams healthy! They are also inviting the public to join them on March 22nd, World Water Day, to showcase displays created throughout the month, plus Magoo the Magician and refreshments for all!

Lake Winnipeg Water Level Regulation Workshop
Manitoba Eco-Network Water Caucus
March 19, 2011 10 am to 3 pm
Lake Winnipeg’s water levels have been regulated for hydro-electric production since 1976. Public hearings will take place later this year to review Manitoba Hydro’s license to do so. This workshop will explore the history of regulation and its effects on the environment and local communities. Speakers will Include: Dale Hutchison, Manitoba Hydro: “The Lake Winnipeg Regulation Project” Will Braun, Interfaith Task Force on Northern Hydro Development: “Lake Winnipeg Licensing: A Chance for Change” Dr. Dale Wrubleski, Ducks Unlimited Canada, and Dr. Gordon Goldsborough, University of Manitoba: “Coastal wetlands of Lake Winnipeg: An ecologically important resource at risk” Merrell-Ann Phare, Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources: “Lake Winnipeg Regulation and First Nations’ Rights”

Healthy Rivers, Living Lakes Concert
Lake Friendly and Lake Winnipeg Foundation
March 20, 2011 – 2:00pm – 4:30pm
Healthy Rivers, Living Lakes concert on March 20 is a collaboration of musicians, poets, storytellers, artists and comedians coming together to celebrate Manitoba’s beautiful rivers and lakes with an underlying theme of how much we need to protect and care for them. The concert is being MC’d by well known Manitoba comedian Al Rae and the music is being headlined by singer songwriter, Heather Bishop. Musicians Sam Baardman and Susan Israel will be playing as well as poet, Debbie Schnitzer, storyteller Jamie Olivero and actor Scott Douglas. The Arts of Water Project is providing some unique and beautiful artwork in the foyer. This concert, celebrating Canada Water Week, is a first in Winnipeg and promises to attract people from all walks of life.
