Since Chaucer’s time, many of us try to look and feel extra beautiful for that special someone on Valentine’s Day. The beauty industry increases the promotion and advertising for its products and sales of make-up and other cosmetics surges. Next to Mother’s Day, early February is the period of greatest sales of cosmetics.
But how safe are make-up and other cosmetics for your body and the environment? If Health Canada has approved them, are they OK? Is it possible to make yourself pretty without poisoning yourself?
What do you think?
I was relieved to read that my new nail polish doesn’t contain toluene or formaldehyde! But it does make me wonder about some of the stuff I used to use…
For those of you looking for the recipe that Shoni used, here you go!
Ingredients:
1 cup pure Almond Scented liquid castile soap (Dr. Bronners)
1 cup Chamomile tea (brewed for 30 minutes)
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon honey
Blend ingredients, put in a squeezable bottle and you are good to go.
Use: You only need a VERY small amount to get a lot of suds, so try about 1 tbsp to start and go from there. WATCH OUT not to get this in your eyes!
Best thing about this Shampoo is that you can use it to soap up the rest of your body, 2 in 1!
Well, last night I ran out of Shampoo…and after reading this post, I felt there was no way I could contribute to the February cosmetics bulge. I ended up doing some research online (which certainly made my stomach curl) and found out that while we do not have control over a lot of disgusting things they put in cosmetics, and it seems Health Canada is not the best regulator. We can control what we each use. I ended up being able to make a pretty amazing Shampoo with some ingredients I had around the house! Problem solved, chemical, waste, and expense avoided!
I’m darn ugly and I don’t think make-up would help. 😉
