Green Action Centre Seeks Bike Education Instructor

Who We Are:
Green Action Centre is an environmental, non-profit organization based in Winnipeg and serving Manitoba. We are a registered charity, governed by an elected board of directors, with a core group of passionate, dedicated staff. We promote greener living through environmental education and encourage practical green solutions for households, workplaces, schools and communities. Our primary areas of focus are green commuting, composting and waste reduction, sustainable living, and resource conservation. We also run a social enterprise, Compost Winnipeg, which collects commercial and residential organic waste in Winnipeg. We are located in the heart of downtown. Our office is located on Treaty 1 territory, the ancestral lands of Anishinaabeg, Ininew, Anishininiwag, Dakota, and Dene Peoples, and the homeland of the Métis Nation.
The Position:
The Bike Education Instructor plays a key role in our efforts to demonstrate and educate bike and road safety to middle years students as part of the Bicycle Education Safety Training program (BEST). The Bike Education Instruction is responsible for leading bicycle riding and safety training sessions, coordinating session times with participating schools, and record keeping and reporting. This position reports directly to the Sustainable Transportation Team Lead and BEST committee, consisting of members from other cycling advocate organizations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Participate in Instructor Training provided by Green Action Centre
- Coordinate with participating school divisions and schools to schedule, deliver, and navigate bike education trainings
- Train physical education teachers in Bike Education Training
- Report and track any necessary bike repairs, tools, and supplies to Sustainable Transportation Lead
- Prepare reports on programs successes, challenges, and opportunities
- Attend quarterly committee meetings and providing updates on your instructing and training of schools and teachers
- Develop and maintain relationships with schools and other community partners
- Assist in other duties assigned that support the BEST Program
Who You Are:
You’re passionate about bikes, safety, and education! You want to work somewhere you can feel good about, and you want to do it with a passionate group of like minded people. Ideally, you’re someone who is organized, deadline driven, and has excellent time management skills. We don’t love micromanaging, so we’re looking for someone who is able to work independently and without close supervision. Some of the qualifications we’re looking for are:
- Program coordination, delivery, and tracking
- Teaching, instructing, and coaching experience
- Strong bike riding and safety knowledge, as well as complete ability in bike riding amongst traffic
- Knowledge, interest, and passion surrounding sustainability and transportation
- Ability to mentor and co-teach
- Strong knowledge of existing bike routes, infrastructure, and ability to map bike routes to lead rides on
- Time management and scheduling skills
- Strong presentation and communication skills
- Excellent stakeholder relation skills
- Ability to coordinate transportation of bikes, supplies, and tools
- Respectful of school policies and procedures
Other skills and abilities we are looking for include:
- Ability to meet physical demands
- A valid Class 5 driver’s license
- Ability to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds
- Able to travel between school locations

What We Offer:

- A convenient downtown office on major bus routes and indoor bike parking (necessary for quarterly meetings only, or can join remotely)
- Flexible schedule during regular office hours (some evenings and weekends may be required during events)
