Directors of Green Action Centre are elected by members at an Annual General Meeting held in June. Directors serve 2-year terms on the board. Meetings are held monthly. The responsibilities of board members are set out in Green Action Centre’s bylaws. Participation on the board of a non-profit organization can be a rewarding volunteer experience. William Dowie
President
(Appointed 2012) William Dowie has been an environmental management consultant since 1993. He is an apolitical appointment as a citizen member of the Mayor’s Environmental Advisory Committee and is Past Chair for the City of Winnipeg Museums Board. He is a board member with the Friends of Gardens Manitoba. As a self-employed entrepreneur, William is a member of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce. Working with homeowners, industry and government, William concentrates on helping people become environmentally responsible using pollution prevention tools. This helps save both money and resources, and moves people towards sustainability at work, rest, and play. He completed his BA in Applied Economics at the U of M and continues to pursue graduate level work within the Faculties of Engineering, Architecture, and Environment. He holds a business certificate in Non-profit Management, a Master’s Certificate in Project Management, and is a LEED Accredited Professional specializing in Operations and Maintenance. He is a Master Gardener and holds a Certificate in Permaculture, where he practices ecological design principles at work and home. A self-declared naturalist, his family property has five certifications in naturalization and biodiversity, and has been featured on local garden tours and CBC radio.
Denis De Pape
Vice President
(Appointed 2011) Denis joined Green Action Centre’s board because its mission and programs aligned with his interests in sustainability, reducing car usage and combatting affluenza. A non-driver all of his life, Denis is now rewired and an avid volunteer, having coached soccer and basketball, has advocated for French Immersion schools, participated in church and school advisory councils, facilitated planning and organizational workshops for numerous NGOs and also serves on the Board of Directors of Save Our Seine and Trees Winnipeg. For many years, Denis taught a course in natural resource and environmental economics and sustainability at the Natural Resources Institute, University of Manitoba. He has spent much of his career working for InterGroup Consultants, assessing and finding ways to mitigate or enhance the socio-economic effects of infrastructure and resource development projects. His favourite activity is biking through the parks and trails of South St. Vital including the magical Bois-des-Esprit, the largest natural area area along the Seine River in Winnipeg.
Sarah Neufeld
Treasurer
(Appointed 2013) Sarah joined Green Action Centre’s board due to an interest in environmental sustainability and the individual efforts and impact that one can make on the environment. She also has a love for the outdoors and enjoys camping, golfing and travelling. She earned her Bachelor of Commerce (Hon.) degree in 2011 from the Asper School of Business and was chair of the Corporate Responsibility and Environmental Committees for the Winnipeg PricewaterhouseCoopers office for 2 years. She is an advocate of alternate transportation, healthy living, and composting. Sarah is in the process of obtaining her Chartered Accountant designation and hopes to contribute her financial knowledge and experience to further the amazing efforts being made by Green Action Centre to promote sustainability and environmental awareness
Anika Terton
Director
(Appointed 2012) Ani works for Climate Change Connection, a project of the Manitoba Eco-Network, where she is responsible for coordinating outreach initiatives, delivering presentations, generating information and outreach pieces, and aiding in the delivery of anti-idling initiatives. Ani is also involved with the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition, which is a united front of youth from across Canada tackling the biggest challenge of our generation: the climate crisis. She also attended the United Nations Climate Change Negotiations in Durban, South Africa, as a member of the Canadian Youth Delegation.
Prior to working with Climate Change Connection, she finished her Master’s thesis on Canadian climate change policy, and volunteered and worked at the Environmental Policy Research Centre in Berlin and the German Cultural Centre in Toronto. Ani is originally from Germany but adopted Canada as her new home over three years ago. Camping, cycling, kayaking and yoga are just some of her favourite things to do in her free time. Inspiring and empowering people is a theme that resonates through her personally, and something that she believes will become increasingly necessary in our modern society.
Amber van den Broek
Director
(Appointed 2012) Amber van den Broek joined Green Action Centre’s board out of an interest in working with a community-based organization that focuses on education and making small changes that count in reducing individual carbon foot prints. Her ‘green’ focus comes from being an avid lover of the outdoors, yoga, running, biking, skiing, and anything that lets you breathe deeply, and breathe fresh air! Amber earned her Bachelor of Commerce from the Asper School of Business in 2004 in Marketing and Entrepreneurship and has started various environmentally focused events and awareness campaigns throughout her career. Currently working as a realtor in Winnipeg, Amber coaches clients on buying responsibly, implementing easily adoptable efficiencies around the home/workplace, and making sustainable use of space and furniture. She is enthusiastic about running a ‘green’ business and passionate about helping people make responsible, ethical and sustainable choices!
James Magnus-Johnston
Director
(Appointed 2013) James has worked in the financial industry, in policy positions with Canadian lawmakers, and in the communications industry as an editor. An Ecological Economist, James completed his MPhil in Economics at Cambridge University, where he studied the growth requirement imposed by the global banking system. He is interested in the institutional transition to a non-growing “steady state” economy through low-impact living, debt and carbon reduction strategies, and the use of entrepreneurship to ignite rapid change. He serves as the Canadian Director for the Centre for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy (CASSE), as a lecturer in economics and politics with Canadian Mennonite University, and is a founding member of Transition Winnipeg’s Initiating Committee. His commentary has appeared in CASSE’s The Daly News, the Post Carbon Institute Energy Bulletin (now Resilience.org), as well as the Winnipeg Free Press.
Peter Ward
Director
(Appointed 2014) Peter is a lawyer in the tax group at Taylor McCaffrey LLP where a significant portion of his practice is helping non-profit organizations and registered charities with their tax and compliance issues. Born and raised in Winnipeg, he lives here with his wife and two children. Volunteering is important to his family – he has been co-chair of the Parent Advisory Council at his children’s school for the past few years. He is committed to active transportation – his family all commute to work and school by transit, by foot and by bicycle. He is pleased to see the progress that Winnipeg has made in this area over the past few years and looks forward to supporting the continuing work.
Darlene Johnson
Director
(Appointed 2014) Darlene Johnson joined the board because she believes in environmental awareness and giving back to the community. She became involved with Green Action Centre through the University of Winnipeg, assisting them in building the Human Resource policy infrastructure. She loves the outdoors and participates in cycling, gardening, traveling and walking. She regularly gives her time as a volunteer and has assisted organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Big Brother Big Sister, IRCOM, and Siloam Mission. Previously she has been on the Kiwanis Club of Casa Loma Board of Directors and the Kim Phuc Foundation Board of Directors. She has a obtained her certificate in Human Resources Management from the University of Winnipeg and is currently pursuing her CHRP designation. Her aim is to assist the Green Action Centre to promote and accomplish their mission, and contribute her Human Resource knowledge to the organization.
Glen Manning
Director
(Appointed 2014) Glen Manning is a principal and certified Green Roof Professional with HTFC Planning & Design (formerly Hilderman Thomas Frank Cram). His landscape architectural career has spanned nearly 25 years and has included a number of projects which align with Green Action Centre’s sustainable living focus, including naturalization, accessibility, rainwater harvesting, urban arboriculture, winter cities, green roofs, and active transportation planning. He is a cycle commuter and trail enthusiast, advocating for improved AT facilities in the Capital Region as a professional and volunteer. Glen was one of the founders of the grassroots Floodway Recreational Trails Coalition, and has served on the Manitoba Recreational Trails Association as a board member then interpretive committee member since April 2005. He is also a member of the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals (APBP).
Peter Denton
Director
(Appointed 2015) After thirty years of post-secondary teaching, Peter Denton brings a breadth of academic and practical experience to his role as Director. He has published five books, includingTechnology and Sustainability (2014) and Gift Ecology: Reimagining a Sustainable World (2012). Founder and principal consultant (at greenethics.ca, inc.), he blogs at http://peterdenton.ca and can be followed on Twitter @green_ethics.
He was elected one of two Regional Representatives for Major Groups and Stakeholders in North America to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in December 2013. He is a Regional Lead Author in UNEP’s next planetary survey (GEO 6) and a member of the North American Working Group on Sustainable Production and Consumption (NARSPAC). He is also involved in UNEP’s Ten Year Framework of Programs for Sustainable Consumption and Production (10YFP).
Peter is Adjunct Associate Professor of History at the Royal Military College of Canada and is an ordained minister of the United Church of Canada. He has been a Research Associate at the Centre for Professional and Applied Ethics and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Defence and Security Studies (both at the University of Manitoba) since 2007. He holds five degrees, including a Ph.D. in Religion and the Social Sciences (McMaster).
Colin Crolly
Past President
Colin Crolly served on the board from 2006-2013. He joined to help support the wonderful services offered by Green Action Centre employees and volunteers. Colin’s interest in environmental issues has been driven partly by a lifelong passion for outdoor activities like hiking, canoeing, skiing and cycling, but mostly by the hopes for his two young children.
