All that rain last week means that city crews are getting ready for the annual battle against mosquitos. Plans this year include a biological larvicide known as Bti, which is supposed to kill larvae in standing water within 36 hours, and the use of an insecticide called methoprene.
The City of Winnipeg has also said it will continue to use malathion if needed, despite the WHO concluding that it is probably carcinogenic to humans.
If you are concerned about malathion use around your property, contact the City (at 311) to register for a buffer zone. It takes up to 72 hours to be processed, so the sooner you sign up the better. Also, please remember to do your part and get rid of any standing water around your yard (in old flower pots, kiddie pools, etc.)
