School Streets

School streets are car free zones outside of schools that support activity and sustainable transportation among students.

What are School Streets?

School streets are car free zones outside of schools that support activity and sustainable transportation among students. Originating in Italy in the early 1990s in response to congestion in front of schools, this initiative has now spread to many cities around the world, with the first in Canada happening in 2019. There are a wide variety of benefits to school streets including

  • Combat congestion in front of schools at drop off and pickup times
  • Encourage independent mobility
  • Improve air quality around schools
  • Increase sustainable travel methods to school

Make your school commute safer.

Green Action Centre is running two school streets as part of the National Active School Streets Initiative. We are currently seeking a school to participate in this project with us in Spring 2027! If you think this initiative is right for your school, please register in the open call sheet linked below.
