GOtober & WALKtober

Summer is ending and the familiar chill of fall is just around the corner. This is the time to wrap yourself in a scarf and begin planning your many upcoming gatherings. It is also when the kids are back in school and glued to their desks for most of the day.
Just because the weather is changing, doesn't mean we have to stop moving. Green Action Centre encourages sustainable transportation all year round, and what better way to ring in fall with GOtober and Walktober!

WALKtober
Walktober is an annual event in which we encourage kids to walk to school at least once a week during the month of October. Not only does it provide activity before and after the school day, it removes the car trips normally taken to get to school. After a summer of poor air quality, I think we can all agree that less emissions are desperately needed. For older students, 12 and up, it also fosters independence.
How can I participate?
Sign up here to receive our new updated activity kit for kids age 7-14. Folks who sign up have a chance to win some prizes.
We also encourage teachers or parents to track kilometres that their kids/students walk during the month. Submit your kilometre tracking sheet to asrts@greenactioncentre.ca to be considered for a prize! This activity is great for high school students as well! Prizes are high school friendly!
New this year! The City of Winnipeg’s Road Safety Committee will be offering walking safety presentations for schools this month. In this workshop students will learn about traffic signals, pedestrian infrastructure, and how to be safe while walking. After a short presentation, we’ll go on a walking scavenger hunt to see what kinds of infrastructure and traffic signals they can find near the school. These are first-come, first-served, with a limited number available.
