FNWM 4th Waste Coordinator Meetup

On October 17th, the First Nations Waste Minimization team was excited to host our 4th Waste
Coordinator Meetup. Waste Management staff from eleven different First Nations were present
at the event, which piggybacked off of the MARR Manitoba Community Recycling & Waste
Reduction Forum held on October 15th/16th at Canad Inns Polo Park.
The Waste Coordinator Meetup presents an opportunity for waste coordinators from different
First Nations to come together and discuss highlights, challenges, best practices, and
networking. For communities just starting out with recycling, this opportunity is especially
important for understanding the process of implementing recycling in their communities for the
first time.

This year, our team hosted an interactive Spill Response workshop that taught best practices for
different sized spills that the waste management teams might encounter. We also developed a
community highlights presentation, which gave each community who attended a chance to have
their work celebrated and gave them a platform to share more details about their past year of
work.
The event was very successful, with our team receiving positive feedback from attendees as
well as the councilors that were present. We would like to thank all the waste coordinators for
staying an extra day, and participating in our group discussions and activities. Each Waste
Coordinator Meetup event we host leaves us with a good feeling, and this time was no
exception!

Born of the Sustainable Communities Team; our presentations and activities revolve around addressing waste diversion (finding better solutions for ‘garbage’ than landfills, like recycling and composting) holistically and in tandem with our other impacts on our environment. We offer classroom presentations as well as more in depth-learning exercises.
