Green Action Centre Seeks Sustainable Transportation Program Coordinator

Are you passionate about sustainable transportation and engaging communities? Do you want to help schools, students, and organizations adopt greener transportation options? If you’re eager to promote active and safe routes to school and sustainable commuting, this is the role for you!

Who We Are:

Green Action Centre is an environmental, non-profit organization based in Winnipeg and serving Manitoba. We are a registered charity, governed by an elected board of directors, with a core group of passionate, dedicated staff. We promote greener living through environmental education and encourage practical green solutions for households, workplaces, schools and communities. Our primary areas of focus are green commuting, composting and waste reduction, sustainable living, and resource conservation. We also run a social enterprise, Compost Winnipeg, which collects commercial and residential organic waste in Winnipeg. We are located in the heart of downtown. Our office is located on Treaty 1 territory, the ancestral lands of Anishinaabeg, Ininew, Anishininiwag, Dakota, and Dene Peoples, and the homeland of the Métis Nation.

The Position:

As a Sustainable Transportation Program Coordinator, you’ll work with schools and communities to make active, green transportation appealing and accessible. Reporting to the Sustainable Transportation Program Lead, your role will be key in reducing Manitoba’s environmental impact through promoting walking, cycling, public transit, and carpooling as preferred  and accessible modes of travel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with schools and community stakeholders to encourage sustainable travel and share resources
  • Coordinate and/or support events such as Bike to School Month, Clean Air Day, Walktober, and Jack Frost for Kids
  • Develop event work plans, manage logistics, secure sponsorships, and handle media relations.
  • Engage with participants by providing workshops, resources, and training
  • Maintain accurate records, update event pages, and manage prize distributions
  • Support and participate in the Bicycle Education and Skills Training Committee by taking meeting minutes and attending quarterly meetings
  • Liaise with committees, partners, and stakeholders to build relationships and foster sustainable transportation programs
  • Manage project budgets, help prepare funding proposals and reports
  • Contribute to Green Action Centre’s broader initiatives and collaborate with team members on various programs
  • Other duties as assigned

Who You Are:

You’re passionate about the environment! You want to work somewhere you can feel good about, and you want to do it with a really cool group of like minded people. Ideally you’re someone who is organized, deadline driven, and has excellent time management skills. We don’t love micromanaging, so we’re looking for someone who is able to work independently and without close supervision. Some of the qualifications we’re looking for are:

  • Strong knowledge of sustainable transportation (green commuting and active transportation)
  • Experience working collaboratively, specifically at the community level and/or with non-profits
  • Experience in program delivery and/or event planning and project coordination
  • Communications experience, including media campaigns and event promotion
  • Demonstrated ability in public speaking, and with presentations and displays

The following qualifications are not necessary, but would be considered great assets:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Urban Planning, or related field
  • Experience working with diverse communities
  • Knowledgeable about rural/northern Manitoba communities
  • Knowledge of local and provincial sustainability and environmental issues
  • Experience using WordPress and social media
  • Passion for sustainability and environmental issues is a strong asset.
  • Experience with media relations (interviews, writing press releases, etc.)
  • Experience in budgeting and reporting
  • Ability to speak and write in French

Please note that Green Action Centre is committed to equity and diversity in the workplace. We encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet 100% of the above criteria. A combination of lived and work experience will be considered.
