After the School Bell Rings

Green Action Centre is pleased to partner with Recreation Connections Manitoba on a new two year initiative – After The School Bell Rings: A Manitoba After School Recreation Project. This initiative is focused on physical activity and healthy living practices for children and youth in the critical after school time period. After completing baseline data collection, all School Travel Planning pilot schools in Manitoba are now working on their Action Plans. With guidance from Green Action Centre, the schools are developing solid action plans with short, medium and long term goals that look at events, incentives and infrastructure changes. The next step will take these action plans from the school committees to municipal committees to address the barriers to active school travel.

 

Funding Opportunities
Keg Spirit Foundation:  Will consider applications from registered charities for projects that relate to children and contain a mentoring component. Grants typically range from $2,000-$5,000. Deadline April 30, 2011.

First Sports Program:  NEW! Manitoba Community Places Program fund that provides grants of up to $10,000 for community and recreation clubs to purchase shared sports equipment. Community clubs serving youth can apply to undertake small capital projects. Deadline: April 30, 2011.

National Dialogue on Healthy Weights

Want to get involved in the conversation on childhood obesity? Share an idea. Rate and comment on other people’s ideas. Work with other participants to suggest ways to move towards healthy weights for youth. Our Health Our Future: A National Dialogue on Healthy Weights.

A recent essay written by Susan Piedmont-Palladino titled “Walking the Walk” looks at why fewer children today are walking or biking to school.  She attributes the decline to misguided road and intersection decisions resulting in an unsafe environment unsafe for children to bike or walk.
