What Is School Travel Planning?

School Travel Planning (STP) aims to get more families walking and wheeling to and from school by bringing together community stakeholders to identify barriers to active transportation and creating an action plan.

Green Action Centre’s Active and Safe Routes to School (ASRTS) program has collaborated with Manitoba schools for over a decade, helping to eliminate barriers to active travel for kids. By implementing travel plans, schools can:

  • improve student health and school performance
  • reduce risk of collision around schools
  • fight air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions

The process typically unfolds under the guidance of a STP Facilitator who guides community stakeholders – including school staff, parents, municipal transportation engineers, public health staff and police – through the five phase process:

  1. Program Set-Up
  2. Data Collection & Problem Identification
  3. Action Planning
  4. Implementation
  5. Ongoing Monitoring

The Canadian STP framework developed by Green Communities Canada (GCC) is flexible so that it accommodates different geographical and social compositions and varying levels of local program resources. Any community can use it.Chart Showing Five Phases of School Travel Planning

Making It Happen
