Over the past couple of months we’ve been hard at work searching for the right people to join the Green Action Centre team, and we are so excited to announce that we have found three passionate individuals who care about the environment just as much as we do! Please join us in welcoming…

Jesse Matas

Jesse is a dynamic individual who works across multiple disciplines. He is a year-round cyclist and a dedicated advocate for active and public transportation. He is also a singer-songwriter, poet and multi-instrumentalist. For a decade, he toured extensively throughout North American and Europe, releasing three full length albums as a one third of his band Crooked Brothers. In more recent years he has toured solo, releasing a debut LP under his own name. He holds a MA in peace and conflict studies from the University of Waterloo and a BA in International Development Studies from the University of Winnipeg. He has also worked in various building roles and has an interest in green-building styles. He grew up in Treaty 1 territory in Winnipeg. Among his loves are: his family and friends, xc skiing, folk music, skating on the river and separated bike lanes.

Ashtyn Nauffts

Green Audits Project Assistant

Ashtyn’s passion for the environment and sustainability led her to a degree in Environment and Urban Sustainability at Toronto Metropolitan (formerly Ryerson) University, as well as a post-graduate certificate in Sustainable Waste Management from Fleming College; she also has an undergraduate degree in History. Prior to joining Green Action Centre, Ashtyn worked as a Community Compost Assistant at FoodShare Toronto and a Waste Management Intern with Niagara Region.

Ashtyn is passionate about the intersection of climate and social justice, and in her spare time has been an active member of Climate Justice Toronto, and regularly volunteers with her local political party. She loves the outdoors, especially being close to water, and particularly enjoys sunsets and sunrises. Ashtyn is also very interested in sustainable agriculture, including gardening and composting, and frequents farmers’ markets as often as possible. Her lifelong dream is to live in a yurt as part of a self-sustaining community.

Nick Portengen

Green Audits Project Assistant

Nick has a background in residential home energy audits as an energy advisor. He enjoys working with others to find new ways to care for the planet. Nick has previously worked on a farm and worked in children and youth programs.

In his free time, Nick enjoys working on small projects around the house, taking care of the garden, and cycling. Nick likes doing small woodworking projects and reusing old material to make something new. He also enjoys learning about urban planning, public transportation and regenerative agriculture.

Welcome to the team Jesse, Ashtyn, and Nick!!
