Walking to school builds important physical activity into your day

An article in the Toronto Star caught my eye –

Few kids get enough exercise by playing sports, study finds

The piece references a U.S. report that looked at the physical activity levels of children playing on organized sports teams – and found that the kids were not as active as anticipated.

One paragraph in the article caught my eye –

“…parents often exaggerate how much exercise kids get from attending a couple of games or practices a week, and warned team sports should not replace unstructured outdoor play, phys. ed. and walking or biking to school.”

This helps to enforce the importance of active transportation as a way to build physical activity into our day; making the way we get around as important, if not more so, than the structured trips to the gym, practices and games we work so hard to fit into our already busy schedules.
