U of M Bike Build

Over the past year, students from the University of Manitoba chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers have been busy repairing bicycles donated by the Winnipeg Repair Education and Cycling Hub (WRENCH). Last Friday, they presented these refurbished bikes to nine youth from the community. Some had their previous bike stolen, while others had never owned one before.

Bikes and helmets were carefully adjusted to ensure that they fitted each rider properly. They were also outfitted with locks, water bottles, and maps. The kids were taught the basics of adjusting and repairing their new bicycles. Green Action Centre staff Shoni and Adam were on hand to lead sessions practicing riding skills and mapping out cycling routes.

At the end the morning, everyone in attendance enjoyed delicious fruit smoothies made by their own pedal power in the Green Action Centre’s bike blender. It was a fun and tasty way to cap off a great cycling celebration!
