The School Patrol Program is a good way for schools to address safety concerns at key intersections around the school, as well as to provide leadership opportunities to those students participating in the School Patrol Program. Originally began over 75 years ago, the Manitoba School Patrol Program has been a joint partnership between CAA & MPI for over 20 years, with Winnipeg Police involved in on-the-ground work in Winnipeg, and local Police & RCMP detachments working with communities elsewhere in the province.

School Patrol Awards & Celebrations:
Several sponsors of the School Patrol program recognize their contributions in keeping other students safe through various rewards and celebrations. Not only will students feel great about helping their classmates stay safe, they may also enjoy some gifts and prizes in exchange for their time.

Each year, patrol teams in Winnipeg and Brandon are graded on their performance, reliability and road safety knowledge. At the end of the year, the top teams are celebrated at the annual School Safety Patrol Awards in Winnipeg and Brandon.

Adult Crossing Guards
According to Section 48 of The Public Schools Act, a school board may establish, operate, maintain and regulate a system of patrols for the protection of children from traffic accidents. Therefore, it is up the individual school board and division to allocate funding to schools to hire adult crossing guards.
As stated by Pembina Trails School Division…
The school principals must arrange the initial training of the new crossing guards. Training typically occurs in the fall, at the start of the school year, and is hosted by the Winnipeg Police Department and divisional Safety Officer. For training of crossing guards that start throughout the year, please contact the divisional Safety Officer.
Each crossing guard will receives a copy of the School Crossing Guard Program Manual and a copy of the Crossing Guard Handbook at the end of the training session as well as all the mandatory safety equipment they will need for their job. The handbook can be used to review the procedures and safety practices learned during the session.
Crossing guards must successfully complete the training program before being allowed on duty alone. New recruits may benefit from observing or working with experienced guards. They can gain an understanding of traffic/pedestrian flow, ask questions of the current guards and watch the procedures being demonstrated.
