Green Living Resources

Food For Thought

Did you know the average Manitoba meal travels 2400 kilometres before ending up on the dinner plate (based on figures for North America from the World Resources Institute)? The food we choose to eat and the way food is processed and distributed can directly impact:

  • Climate change
  • Animal rights
  • Air pollution
  • Biodiversity
  • Human health
  • Local economies and self-sufficiency
  • Forests and rainforests
  • Soil erosion

In today’s world, more people are looking to make food choices that are consistent with their deeper values. Some ways to achieve this can be with any of these practices:

  • Fair trade/Horizontal trade
  • Free-range or free-run poultry
  • Locally grown food
  • Locally sold/traded food
  • Naturally grown food
  • Organic (certified and non-certified)
  • Raw or unprocessed
  • Vegetarian/Vegan

By trying any of these actions, you can make a difference! You don’t have try to do them all at once though. For more ideas, visit our Take Action section.
