City infrastructure announcement blazes trail for Winnipeg schoolchildren

Thursday’s Active Transportation infrastructure announcement is a promising step forward in creating safe, connected routes for students to travel actively to and from school.

See the Free Press article and the City’s official media release for more detailed information.

The investment in school-based infrastructure is precedent setting and exciting, highlighting the benefit of wide-spread community engagement and consultation done by Green Action Centre’s Active and Safe Routes to School Program through the Bike Walk Roll Fort Richmond Project. This comes on the coattails of the development of school travel plans at all three of the community schools. The end result was a community specific active travel map that was printed and distributed throughout the community. See the online version here.

Could this model of engaging schools first, followed by comprehensive community consultation be used in other areas? Absolutely! Where will we go next?
