Active and Safe Routes to School Program

Green Action Centre is a non-profit, charitable community organization currently seeking an Outreach Coordinator for the Active and Safe Routes to School (ASRTS) program. This person will work as part of the Active and Safe Routes to School team (with the Program Coordinator and School Travel Planning Coordinator) to actively encourage walking and cycling as healthy alternatives for getting kids to and from school. The candidate will communicate with staff, teachers, parents, school and divisional administration, community stakeholders and students in Manitoba school communities. This person will be the key coordinator of International Walk to School Month and Clean Air Day. He/She will support the other areas of the ASRTS program including policy development, in-class workshops and education, best routes to school mapping, report writing, fundraising and materials development; and share part of the administrative work associated with the Active and Safe Routes to School Program, including social marketing, website updates, and coordinating logistics (making local contacts, catering, venue details, etc.) for out of town workshops.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assists with the organization and implementation of the various components of Green Action Centre’s ASRTS program to meet annual project goals

• Promotes elementary school participation in International Walk to School Month in October and Clean Air Day in June including: managing registrations, answering participants questions, preparing and distributing kit materials, making website updates to materials and web pages, communicating with National partners about materials development, managing the Clean Air Day poster contest, taking care of media details, soliciting and distributing prizes, event follow-up and reporting

• Communicates with schools to encourage environmentally friendly travel year-round through surveys, telephone conversations and site visits as well as ASRTS program components and distribution of the ASRTS Program Handbook and Resource Guide

• Develops and maintains a database for working of schools and community partners

• Does website updates and writes blog posts for the Green Action Centre website, and expands the reach of Green Action Centre’s presence through various social marketing techniques including Facebook and Twitter

• Monitors project-related expenses and budgets in collaboration with the program coordinator

• Writes reports and assists in preparing proposals and funding applications

• Compiles, publishes and distributes the quarterly Active and Safe Routes to School newsletter “Off on the Right Foot”

• Works co-operatively with other staff in implementing Green Action Centre’s complementary workplace, community and Commuter Challenge programs

KEY QUALIFICATIONS:

• Self-reliant capacity to undertake non-profit project organization, including budgeting

• Must be self-motivated, reliable and able to work collaboratively and individually

• Self-initiator with excellent interpersonal and time management skills

• Professional writing, editing, research and communication skills

• Commitment to work in a collaborative setting to achieve common goals

• Background in areas such as communications / social marketing / community development / environmental or health education / urban planning, social change / non-profit project work

• Ability to handle multiple tasks in a brisk work environment with a flexible schedule

• Experience in organizing promotional events, and creativity in developing advertising and media campaigns

• Experience in proposal and report writing

• Ease in giving public presentations and speaking with media

• Demonstrated commitment to the goals of ecological sustainability and sustainable transportation

• Understanding of urban transportation, planning and environmental issues

• Familiar with Community Based Social Marketing concepts (see www.cbsm.com)

• Experience working with teachers, parents, administration and staff in an elementary school setting an asset

ABOUT THE POSITION

• Full-time through to April 2012, with a good possibility of extension contingent on stable program funding

• Position may require some travel within Manitoba and Canada

• Salary to be determined based on experience and qualifications

• Start date: Wednesday, July 13th
