Today is our anniversary! So who are we celebrating this Valentine’s Day? All of the staff, volunteers, and board members who have dedicated their service to Green Action Centre for the past 34 for years. We’re celebrating all of the people who have committed to loving our planet.

The work of our organization began exactly 34 years ago as the Recycling Council of Manitoba. Winnipegers were dismayed by the lack of a recycling program in the city and decided to do something about it. On the first recycling drop-off day, over 100 people from around Winnipeg brought newspapers, cans, and bottles. On that day, over 100 people chose to divert their waste from the landfill. As the recycling program grew, the City of Winnipeg recognized the significance of the movement and eventually implemented the blue box program we know today.

Over the years, the Recycling Council of Manitoba shifted it’s focus from purely recycling to promoting general waste reduction and diversion throughout all of Manitoba. Along with this came a name change to Resource Conservation Manitoba. In 2010, we branched out further to include sustainable transportation in our programming. At this time our name changed to Green Action Centre.

Because of the dedicated work of staff, volunteers, and board members for the past 34 years, hundreds of thousands of Manitobans have learnt about the importance of sustainable transportation and waste reduction at home, at work, at school, and in their communities.

We’re looking forward to continuing to help Manitobans love and care for our earth for many years to come.
