When the Pembina cycle track opened in the summer of 2013, lots of people were excited to have a bike lane with physical separation from cars. (What the heck is a cycle track? See our guide on cycling infrastructure.)

This cycle track is a bit different from other protected bike lanes in Winnipeg as there are several bus stops along its length.

To avoid bus drivers and cyclists having to manoeuvre around one another at each bus stop, the cycle track rises up to sidewalk level at those spots and curves around a bus stop ‘island’ extension where people waiting for the bus can stand or sit. Just be sure to yield to people walking away from or onto this portion of the sidewalk.

Once past the bus stop, the cycle track returns to street level.
