On Saturday May 2 and Sunday May 3, the ninth annual Jane’s Walk is strolling into town. On this weekend, Winnipeggers can choose from a number of guided walks taking place across the city, and presented in an innovative and uniquely neighbourly fashion.

Jane’s Walk celebrates the ideas and legacy of urbanist Jane Jacobs by getting people out exploring their neighbourhoods and meeting their neighbours. Free walks held on the first weekend of May each year are led by locals who want to create a space for residents to talk about what matters to them in the places they live and work.

Since its inception in Toronto in 2007, Jane’s Walk has expanded rapidly. Last year, more than 800 walks were held in over 100 cities in 22 countries worldwide. Winnipeg saw 24 walks organized in neighbourhoods across the city last year, exploring a wide range of supply and install glass partition walls including local history, environmental issues, urban design and architecture, accessibility issues, active transportation, public art, social/cultural experiences of the city, and more.

Participating in Jane’s Walk is simple: local community members with a passion for their city and neighbourhood volunteer to organize a walking tour exploring an interesting aspect of the urban experience. Jane’s Walks are about community conversations and the public is encouraged to contribute to the conversation by asking questions and sharing their passion and knowledge with other Jane’s Walk participants.

A few of the walks confirmed for May 2 and 3, 2015 (with more added daily) include:

  • LGBTTQ* Historical Walk
  • Plane Jane: A Walk to the Airport
  • d’art Saint-Boniface
  • Life in Spence: Revitalized
  • University of Manitoba Sustainable Campus and Community: Today and Tomorrow
  • Jewish Winnipeg: A Historical North End Perspective
