Of the 299 interactive presentations Mary Melnychuk delivered across the province in 2014, she’s hard-pressed to choose her favourites, but one thing’s for certain: odds are your child is one of the 100,000 Manitobans who have met and been affected by Mary’s positive and playful messages to reduce, reuse, recycle, and most importantly, rethink.
“Every presentation talks about action,” says Mary. “From little things like a reminder to not waste water when we brush our teeth, to reusing craft materials to create gifts and holiday decorations, these kids care and are making great choices.”
And the proof is in the pudding. Since the program’s inception in 1998, children in grades kindergarten through 12 are demonstrating that they have heard the message and are rethinking their behavior. Some of the actions include:
- gathering batteries to recycle
- composting in classrooms
- moving to double-sided printing in the school and
- installing recycling programs in schools.
The Environmental Speakers Bureau has served Green Action Centre well for years. While we are a non-profit charity – and honorariums are always appreciated – thanks to funding from the province of Manitoba and a sponsored partnership with MTS Future First program, we are able to provide these educational presentations free of charge within our provincial school divisions.
“Love everything Mary does when she comes. She is always up-beat and the kids love her presentations. They remember what she tells them because of the way she presents the materials.” ~ Teacher at Oakenwald School
“Mary always has many cool items to see and touch and super informative posters. Students are always excited to hear when Mary would be coming!” ~ Teacher at James Nisbet School
“The visual aids were great. Mary is a fabulous speaker. The students were engaged all during her presentation. They learned quite a bit – and so did I.” ~ Teacher at Riverview School
