Term: 1 Year Term, full time

Who We Are: 

Green Action Centre is an environmental, non-profit organization based in Winnipeg and serving Manitoba. We are a registered charity, governed by an elected board of directors, with a core group of passionate, dedicated staff. We promote greener living through environmental education and encourage practical green solutions for households, workplaces, schools and communities. Our primary areas of focus are green commuting, composting and waste reduction, sustainable living, and resource conservation. We also run a social enterprise, Compost Winnipeg, which collects commercial and residential organic waste in Winnipeg. We are located in the heart of downtown. Our office is located on Treaty 1 territory, the ancestral lands of Anishinaabeg, Ininew, Anishininiwag, Dakota, and Dene Peoples, and the homeland of the Métis Nation. 

The Position:

The Compost & Waste Reduction Program Coordinator plays a key role in engaging Manitobans in composting and waste reduction while increasing our public profile and working with schools, community organizations, and businesses. We are seeking someone who enjoys a diverse workload, working with the public, and is capable of taking action to broaden our community impact. This position reports directly to the Circular Living Team Lead. They will also work collaboratively with the Office Coordinator and other program staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, tailor, and deliver school and community presentations and workshops
  • Work with newcomer organizations to deliver workshops surrounding sustainability 
  • Attend displays at conferences and community events
  • Assist with planning the Master Composter Volunteer Training Course to be held in fall 2025, and work with the Composting & Waste Reduction Program staff to deliver the course
  • Assist with managing Green Action Center’s Master Composter Volunteer Network
  • Work with the Compost & Waste Reduction team to deliver waste audits for businesses, schools, and organizations
  • Prepare project proposals and reports in consultation with Composting & Waste Reduction Program staff and Team Lead
  • Contribute to the overall objectives of the organization including staffing displays, supporting key Green Action Centre sustainable living focused events, attending regular staff meetings, and routine office tasks
  • Prepare material related to the program, including developing and updating publications and program resources, and working with the Marketing and Communications manager to develop website and social media content
  • Speak to the media on program-specific subjects
  • Assist with delivering Green Audits. Green Audit Service specific responsibilities include:
    • Liaise with clients, potential/current, for the purpose of service delivery, networking, and business development
    • Develop resources, visual presentations, and curate educational sessions for clients
    • Prepare and distribute surveys, and analyze the data collected from surveys and waste audits
    • Research and identify relevant information on Climate Change (origin, causes, consequences, solutions) 
  • Other duties, as assigned

Who You Are: 

You’re passionate about the environment! You want to work somewhere you can feel good about, and you want to do it with a really cool group of like minded people. Ideally, you’re someone who is organized, deadline driven, and has excellent time management skills. We don’t love micromanaging, so we’re looking for someone who is able to work independently and without close supervision. Some of the qualifications we’re looking for are:

  • Knowledge of local and global sustainability and environmental issues and demonstrated commitment to the practices of sustainable living
  • Knowledge of composting and waste reduction
  • Experience in meeting and workshop facilitation, event planning, and engaging with the media
  • Experience working with children and youth
  • Excellent written communication skills in English
  • Demonstrated ability in public speaking, and with presentations and displays
  • Experience with partnership development and working with diverse communities

The following qualifications are not necessary, but would be considered great assets: 

  • Post-secondary graduate with a focus on environmental science or other relevant area of study 
  • Knowledge of the different waste management programs and infrastructures in Manitoba
  • Experience in budgeting and reporting
  • Ability to speak and write in French

Physical Demands & Other Requirements

  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license is required
  • Ability to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Comfortable working in an open office environment
  • Able to work evenings and weekends as required
  • Willing to travel as required
