Public Forum on Winnipeg Waste Plan and the Environment

Winnipeg – March 29, 2011

Green Action Centre is holding a public forum on Wednesday about the City of Winnipeg’s new garbage and recycling plan. Currently, the City of Winnipeg diverts only 17 per cent of waste from landfills, one of the lowest rates for any major city in Canada.

“Compostable organics are the biggest part of the residential waste stream. With every truckload of garbage, we are wasting valuable resources.” said Josh Brandon, communications coordinator with Green Action Centre.

The event will give Winnipeg residents a chance to hear presentations from Darryl Drohomerski, manager of solid waste services with the City of Winnipeg, and Craig Pats, from Waste Management Inc. They will look at the options for waste diversion and take questions from the event organizers and the public. It will be hosted by CBC Radio’s Marcy Markusa.

This event is will focus of the environmental implications of the plan as well as take a comprehensive perspective on the full lifecycle of waste.

“The whole waste system is all interconnected, so the choices we make about collection affect what we are able to do with the end materials and how valuable those resources are,” said Brandon. “Winnipeg residents need to have their voices heard on all aspects of our waste system.
