Waste Reduction Week runs October 19-25, 2015

Winnipeg, MB. October 15, 2015 — Green Action Centre is looking to encourage Manitobans to save – and in some cases earn – money while reducing their waste.

“There are many steps we can all take to live a little greener,” says Tracy Hucul, Executive Director, Green Action Centre. “Small changes can have big impacts, to our wallets and our environment.”

Waste Reduction Week is a national event to raise awareness about the importance of reducing our collective environmental footprint and to celebrate activities to live greener in our schools, workplaces, homes and communities. This year’s activities offered by Green Action Centre include:

Recycle My Cell Student Challenge: A friendly competition among Canadian schools to see which can recycle the most cell phones and accessories during the collection period. The winning school in each province receives $500 for their green programs; all participating schools receive $1 for every phone they collect and recycle. Last year, Decker Colony School won the challenge for Manitoba – set a target for your school!

Caught in the Act!: Green Action Centre team members will be out looking to catch Winnipeggers in the act of doing green things for the environment; things like using a reusable bag/mug or recycling. Those ‘caught’ will be rewarded with an upcycled bag made from the 2014 Juno Award banners, a partnership with the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ – now that’s something to sing about!
