Do you want to teach your students how to reduce your school’s waste, and at the same time help our environment?

Composting and its many benefits can be built into school lesson plans through various composting related activities. You can do vermicomposting in your classroom or your school can start an outdoor school-wide composting program. To help your school decide which system is best for you, more information can be found HERE.  Regardless of which option you choose, we can help.

An initial classroom presentation to help introduce school composting, including backyard and vermicomposting ( composting with worms) is typically 30 minutes long. This presentation can be tailored to grades K-12, and is a fee of $180.

A complete school compost set-up is $300.

The complete set-up includes a site visit, ongoing consultation support/troubleshooting, AND a training presentation to students and staff who will be in charge of the bin.

Resources we provide with set-up include:

  • School Composts! Composting Manual
  • School Composts! Tools and Activities Guide
  • School-wide composting strategy worksheet
  • Waste audit lesson plans
  • Curriculum links for composting (available in French)
  • Green Action Centre’s price list as well as a price list for other materials.

Please note that a compost bin and aerators are not included, and may be purchased by the school at an additional cost. We can provide references and feedback on which tools we have found to work best.

Once your school has a bin, here are some great tips to keep your compost system going.

You can register for a presentation or browse our full list of school presentations here. We can also provide you with information and support to help you get started.
